The Mayflower and a second ship the Speedwell left England in July 1620, however because the Speedwell was not seaworthy, the ships had to return to port twice. On September 6, the Mayflower sailed on alone from Plymouth England. The intended destination was the northern part of the Virginia Colony near mouth of the Hudson River (present day New York City) but due to storms and possibly navigational error, they landed much further north at Cape Cod 66 days later. Attempts were made to sail south but due to dangerous shallow waters and poor wind, they were unable. After several weeks of searching the coastline on December 16, an abandon Wampanoag village was found to be suitable.
